NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team and Westminster were tied 5-5 at halftime of tonight's PAC Championship match until the Titans pulled away with 10 second-half goals to secure a 15-5 victory.
With the loss, the second-seeded Presidents end the 2019 campaign with a 9-8 overall record, their fifth straight season with an above .500 record. The Red & Black have been in a conference championship match in four consecutive years, winning two and losing two. The first-seeded Titans improve to 14-2 on the season are a perfect 9-0 against PAC competition.Â
The first half tonight featured a back-and-forth contest, as the two teams sat tied at 5-all after 30 minutes. After Westminster took an early 3-1 lead, W&J rallied to take a 5-3 advantage with four unanswered goals.
Rae LaRochelle (East Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) continued to lead the Presidents' offense with a team-high two goals in the half.Â
It was in the second half that the Titans took control of the match. In addition to its two goals to conclude the opening stanza, Westminster ended the game on a 12-0 run. This led to the Titan owning a time of possession advantage, resulting in a 25-1 lead in shots in the final 30 minutes.Â
Pacing the Red & Black's attack tonight was LaRochelle with two goals. The junior concludes the year with single-season program records with 95 points and 71 goals.Â
Jenna Allen (Sanford, Fla./Seminole) and
Alexis Miller (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) joined LaRochelle with two points, as both logged a goal and an assist. Â
Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) and
Kayla Boulas (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) rounded out W&J's point-scorers with one point each. Tonight capped a career season for Bobrovnikova, who shattered her previous career highs with 47 points, 24 goals and 23 assists, her points ranking second on the team.Â
With added pressure in the second half, rookie goalie
Sam Lenfesty (Frederick, Md./Frederick) impressed with 10 saves, finishing the game with a season-best 15 overall. Lenfesty ends her freshman season with a 6-1 record and 81 saves.Â
Miller also had a strong showing on the defensive end of the field, tallying a team-high four caused turnovers to go along with two ground balls. In her final collegiate match,
Allison Onslow (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) logged two caused turnovers and one ground ball.
