Volleyball overcomes slow start, rolls past Mount Aloysius in 2019 opener

RADNOR, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team battled back from an opening set loss to claim a 3-1 victory over Mount Aloysius College Friday night at the Cavalier Clash hosted by Cabrini University. 

After 15 ties and eight lead changes in the opening set, Mount Aloysius outlasted W&J to claim the first by a 31-29 score. W&J showed great resolve and resiliency to roll to victory in the next three sets. The Presidents secured the second set by a decisive 25-16 score to even the match. W&J then carried that momentum into the third set, as they trounced the Mounties by a 25-8 score. The Red and Black then added a 25-15 set four win to claim the match by a 3-1 margin. 

A solid effort around the net keyed the Presidents during the victory, as the squad tallied a .221 hitting percentage with 13 total team blocks. 

Senior middle hitter Morgan Jacques (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Science & Technology Academy) registered a team-high 12 kills with just one attack error for a .440 hitting percentage. Jacques chipped in a match-high seven blocks to pace the Presidents.

Junior outside hitter Haley Nelson (Warren, Pa./Warren) and freshman outside hitter Claire Sauerland (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) finished with 10 kills and nine kills, respectively. Annalise Gillespie (California, Pa./California Area) was strong in her collegiate debut, as the sophomore finished with seven kills and six total blocks. 

Senior setter Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) finished with a match-high 28 assists. Defensively, senior libero Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) collected 23 digs while senior outside hitter Julia Galbraith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) finished with 12 digs and three service aces. 

The Presidents face host Cabrini (1 PM) before taking on Swarthmore College (3 PM) on day two Saturday at the Cavalier Clash.
