WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Despite scoring the first goal of the afternoon, the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team fell 3-1 in non-conference action to SUNY Geneseo on Saturday.
Following a scoreless first quarter that only included one shot total, both teams found the back of the cage in the second quarter.
In the game's 26
th minute, freshman
Josephine Robson (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) inserted W&J's first penalty corner of the afternoon to
Reghan Dunn (Earleville, Md./Bohemian Manor) on the left side of the circle. Dunn collected the ball and fired in her first goal of the season.
Late in the first half, Geneseo's Elisa Arcara corralled a loose ball in the circle and blasted home the Knight's first goal of the afternoon. The teams entered halftime tied at one.
In the third quarter goalie
Rena Israel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) held Geneseo at bay by keeping the Knights off the scoreboard for 15 minutes with six saves.
However a Geneseo penalty corner allowed play to continue beyond the expiration of the quarter, and Geneseo's Erin Nolan poked in a goal from the right corner to hand the Knights a 2-1 edge heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter both teams were awarded penalty corners with Geneseo converting in the 52
nd minute and the Presidents hitting the left post in the 53
rd.
Israel finished the afternoon with a season-best nine saves.
Genseo (4-2) outshot the Presidents 14-4 (12-4 SOG) and held a 10-3 advantage in earned penalty corners.
W&J (2-3) begins Empire 8 play next Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at Utica.
