PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team suffered a pair of losses to wrap up play at the Carnegie Mellon University DoubleTree Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Presidents fell in straight sets to Scranton University and Case Western Reserve.
Scranton 3, W&J 0 (17-25, 13-25, 19-25)
The Presidents fell by set scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-19 to the Royals.
Haley Nelson (Warren, Pa./Warren) tallied six kills while
Julia Galbraith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) added five successful attacks.
Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) collected 18 assists and added eight digs.
Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) registered a team-best 16 digs while
Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) tallied 10 digs.
Ashley Kovel (Everett, Pa./Everett) knocked down four total blocks to lead all Presidents.
Case Western Reserve 3, W&J 0 (10-25, 8-25, 18-25)
The Spartans claimed the match by set scores of 25-10, 25-8 and 25-18. Nelson once again led the offensive attack with seven kills. Tomassini dished out 18 assists while
Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) produced 15 digs to pace the defense.
W&J opens Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 21 when they travel to Bethany College for a league tri-match. The Presidents face the host Bison at 11 a.m. before taking on Chatham University at 1 p.m.
