-- The Washington & Jefferson women's tennis team snapped Saint Vincent College's four-match winning streak with an 8-1 road victory Sunday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match.
W&J swept Saint Vincent in doubles play to open the match. The top tandem of sophomore
Maya Krishnasamy (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) and freshman
Isabella Goldman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) secured an 8-6 win at first doubles. Senior
Jade Annaldo (North Kingstown, R.I./Scituate) and sophomore
Vanesa Hyde (Manns Choice, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) breezed to an 8-3 victory at second doubles while seniors
Megan Berard (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and
Caitlin Shellhamer (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) won by an 8-5 score at third doubles.
Krishnasamy rolled to an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory at first singles. Berard and Annaldo claimed straight set wins in singles play, with the former winning by a 6-0, 6-1 score at third singles and Annaldo claiming a 6-1, 6-3 win at fourth singles.
Shellhamer needed a third-set tiebreaker (6-3, 3-6, 10-5) at fifth singles while Hyde added a third-set tiebreaker win of her own at sixth singles (7-6, 6-7, 10-5).
The win improves W&J to 2-1 in conference play and 3-5 overall. The loss drops Saint Vincent to 1-2 in the PAC and 5-2 overall.
The Presidents host Geneva College for a conference clash on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Start time is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center.
