Volleyball wraps up play at CWRU Invitational


CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team fell twice at the Case Western Reserve Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Cleveland. 

The Presidents lost 3-1 to John Carroll in Saturday's opener. After falling 25-21 in the first set to the Presidents, the Blue Streaks rattled off three straight set wins (30-28, 25-15, 25-18). W&J then suffered a 3-0 setback to SUNY Geneseo in the finale. The Knights won by set scores of 25-21, 25-15, 25-14. 

John Carroll 3, W&J 1 (25-21, 28-30, 15-25, 18-25) 

W&J opened with a 25-21 win in the opening set against John Carroll. The Presidents seemed poised to take a 2-0 lead, gaining set point three times in the second set before falling 30-28. The Blue Streaks then sealed the match with a 25-15 win in the third and a 25-18 decision in the fourth. 

Senior outside hitter Julia Gailbraith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) poured in a team-best 11 kills while also collecting 16 digs in the loss to the Blue Streaks. Offensively, junior Haley Nelson (Warren, Pa./Warren) and senior Julia Bernesser (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) tallied nine and eight kills, respectively. 

Senior libero Makenzie Coughlin (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) led the way defensively with 27 digs, while senior setter Mallory O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) registered 18 assists and sophomore setter Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) added 17 assists. 

SUNY Geneseo 3, W&J 0 (21-25, 15-25, 14-25)

SUNY Geneseo prevailed 25-21 in the opening set before easing their way to a 25-15 win in the second and a 25-14 victory in the third.

Nelson led the offense with eight kills against the Knights, while Coughlin chipped in 16 digs defensively. 

W&J hosts NAIA member Point Park University on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The match will start at 7 p.m. and be held at nearby Trinity High School.
