WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team rallied to score seven fourth quarter goals but fell 10-9 at Lycoming on Saturday afternoon.
The Presidents Trailed 6-0 after the first quarter and 9-2 heading into the fourth quarter before the Red and Black offense erupted with six-straight scores.
Benjamin Ward (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillian) scored the first of his four fourth-quarter goals with 12:52 left in regulation. A faceoff violation handed possession back to the Presidents and
Pat Moeller (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) found the back of the net less than a minute later.
Ward added three more goals at 8:50, 7:39 and 5:14 left in the period to trim the deficit to 9-7. Lycoming won the ensuing faceoff; however a
Noah Cohen (Hewlett, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) save and a successful clear preceded a Dylan Shephard (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle) goal to cut the Lyco lead to one.
Lycoming answered with a quick tally immediately after the following faceoff to lead 10-8 with 3:41 to play.
Mark Mandak (Enola, Pa./Trinity) fed Ward with just under two minutes remaining to bring the Red and Black back within one (10-9).
The Presidents had one final chance with the ball in the offensive third with under a minute remaining, but W&J could not get a shot off at a game-tying attempt as a turnover ended W&J's comeback hopes.
Ward scored W&J's first goal in the second quarter and Moeller had a scoring strike in the third.
The Presidents and Warriors both found success in the clearing game with each squad only recording two unsuccessful clears on the afternoon.
Ward paced W&J with a career-high six goals. Moeller added two goals while Mandak had a pair of assists. Shepherd finished with one goal while
Alex Strain (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and
Pat Brunner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) each had one assist.
Cohen finished with 21 saves and six ground balls. Defender
Jake Duda (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) caused four turnovers and scooper a pair of ground balls. Despite committing five penalties, W&J held Lycoming scoreless in man-up opportunities.
Lycoming (2-0) owned advantages in faceoff wins (16-6), ground balls (44-23) and shots (51-36). The Warriors had at least 11 plays register a point and were led by Rory Hines' three goals and one assist.
W&J (0-2) returns home for a 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening matchup with Hood College.
