Women's Water Polo opens 2020 slate with split at home invitational

Date: Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, 1:30 p.m. 
Where: Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pa. 
Opponent: Salem University 
Result: Lost 26-6 
 
How It Happened: The Washington & Jefferson women's water polo team opened the 2020 season with a 26-6 loss to Salem University. The Presidents were trailing by a 6-4 margin after the first quarter but got outscored 9-1 in the second quarter. Salem then outscored W&J by an 11-1 tally the rest of the way. 
 
Top Performer: Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led the way in the opener, as the freshman tallied three first quarter goals in her collegiate debut. 
 
The Rest: Marissa Whitby (Los Angeles, Calif./Eagle Rock), Chloe Magyari (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Jillian Curtis (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) each registered a goal apiece.

Where: Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, Pa. 
Opponent: Penn State Behrend 
Result: Won 10-7

How It Happened: W&J picked up its first win of the season, as they outlasted Penn State Behrend by a 10-7 score in Saturday's nightcap. The Presidents overcame a slow start, as they trailed 4-2 in the second quarter before scoring four straight to take a 6-4 edge into halftime. Magyari scored back-to-back before McClellan and Emma Rearson (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) tallied a goal each to give the Presidents a two-goal lead. The Presidents maintained their lead throughout the second half before Magyari capped the win with the final goal with nine seconds left. 
 
Top Performers: Magyari and Rearson registered three goals apiece in the victory over the Lions. 
 
The Rest: McClellan and fellow freshman Megan DePrez (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) tallied two goals each to aid the attack. 


Notes: The Presidents honored Magyari, their lone senior, during the day on Saturday. 

What's Next: The Presidents host Wittenberg University (10:20 AM) and Grove City (4:10 PM) during Sunday's action at the W&J Invitational.
