WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team turned in a strong performance as the Presidents dismantled Medaille 17-7 on a windy Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
The Presidents scored in the game's first 15 seconds as
Clara Sherwood (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) won the opening draw control, advanced to the critical scoring area and fired the ball into the back of the net.
W&J leapt out to a 6-1 advantage in the game's first 10 minutes with Sherwood adding two more goals,
Sofiya Bobrovnikova (Philadelphia, P.a/Northeast) adding a pair and
Jenna Allen (Sanford, Fla./Seminole) adding a single tally.
Over the next 10 minutes, Bobrovnikova scored twice more and
Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) got in on the goal-scoring action as W&J's lead ballooned to 9-2 with 10:29 to play in the first half.
Sherwood and Labovitz each added a goal in the final six minutes of the first half and the Presidents carried an 11-3 lead into the halftime break.
W&J went on a four-goal run over a 10-minute span in the second half to extend its advantage to 15-5 with 17:19 to play, and the Presidents cruised to a double-digit victory with intermittent stretches of running clock the rest of the way.
The President draw control unit of Sherwood, Labovitz and Bobrovnikova dominated the day, winning 19-of-26 draw controls.
Bobrovnikova set season-highs in points (6), goals (4), assists (2) and draw controls (4) in the win. She recorded all four of her goals and both assists in the game's first 20 minutes of play.
Labovitz led the Presidents with seven points on four goals and three assists. She also corralled six draw controls, seven ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Sherwood nabbed a team-best seven draw controls and had four goals, three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Allen scored her firs three goals of the season while
Alexis Miller (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored twice. Both seniors finished with five ground balls and two caused turnovers apiece.
W&J owned a significant edge in shots (43-12), turnovers (17-29) and ground balls (33).
Sam Lenfesty (Frederick, Md./Frederick) made four saves and collected the win for the Presidents.
Medaille was paced by a six-goal outing by Emma Campagna and a 16-save performance by goalie Tatiana Wright.
W&J hosts Albion Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m.
