MCMURRAY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's tennis team opened the spring season with an 8-1 victory over Penn State Altoona on Saturday at the Peters Township Tennis Center.
The win moves W&J to 1-1 on the season while PSA falls to 1-5.
W&J claimed two of the three doubles flights to open the match. The top tandem of Nate Wang (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) and Stephen Mehlbaum (Sellersville, Pa. / Pennridge)
defeated Joshua Wefers and
Ben Maus
by an 8-2 score. Sam Bellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and James Gunn (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside) then won by an 8-2 score at second doubles.
The Presidents won all six singles matches. Wang, Bellini and Mehlbaum all won in straight sets in the top three spots. Jonathan Howland (Goshen, Ky. / North Oldham) claimed a third-set tiebreaker win (3-6, 7-5, 10-3) at fourth singles. James Gunn won in a third-set tiebreaker at the fifth spot as well while Nathan Tang (Malvern, Pa. / Great Valley) secured a 6-4, 6-1 decision at sixth singles.
Weather permitting the Presidents are slated to host Mount Union on Monday, March 2.
