Softball opens 2020 season with doubleheader sweep

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team totaled 23 runs on 25 hits to pick up a non-conference sweep of a season-opening doubleheader against Penn State Greater Allegheny Sunday at Brooks Park.

The Presidents picked up a pair of five-inning victories, as they took game one by a 12-1 score before tacking on an 11-3 victory in the nightcap.

Game One Recap - W&J 12, Greater Allegheny 1 (5 Innings)

W&J had four players record multiple hit efforts in the opener. Laura Ryder (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) went 3-for-3 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored to lead the way in the opener. Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) collected two hits and three RBI while Kristen Fuertes (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) added two hits and two RBI. Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) added two hits and two RBI.

The Presidents jumped on the Lions as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ryder had the big hit of the opening frame, as the senior smacked a two-run double that brought home Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./ Northeastern) and Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley). Ryder added another two-run double in the second inning to make the score 7-0. Lapia and Fuertes then produced run-scoring singles to extend the lead to 9-0. Brooke Shuck (Huntington, Pa./Huntington) then tacked on a sacrifice fly to make the score 10-0.

Lapia added an RBI single in the third to push the edge to 11-0. After a run by Greater Allegheny in the top of the fourth, Dana Parker (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) closed the scoring with a RBI single in the bottom of the frame. That hit concluded the scoring.

That was more than enough support for Fuertes, who worked all 5.0 innings. The senior allowed one run on five hits. She recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in the victory.

Game Two Recap - W&J 11, Greater Allegheny 3 (5 Innings)

The Presidents' offense repeated its fast start from game one. W&J scored six first inning runs to open up with an early lead. McCleester had the big hit of the inning, as she smacked a two-run triple to right field. McCleester would come all the way around to score following an errant throw from the outfield.

Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior) slugged the first home run of the season for the Presidents in the bottom of the second inning. The blast by Stout made the score 7-1 in favor of the Presidents. Later in the frame, Labbe smoked a two-run double to score Lapia and Ryder, as the Presidents extended the advantage to 9-1.

An Eckenrode double in the third inning brought home Parker to make the score 10-1. Julia Hurwitz (Lorton, Va./Hayfield) picked up her first collegiate hit and RBI in the fourth inning when she drove home McCleester. The Lions scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to close the score at 10-3.

McCleester, Eckenrode, Labbe and Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) collected two hits each in the victory. Kulka logged all five innings in the circle to earn the victory. The sophomore allowed three runs on five hits. She registered a career-high six strikeouts against the Lions.

Weather permitting, W&J is slated to face Carnegie Mellon at UPMC All-American Park on Tuesday, March 3. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
