CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team suffered a pair of losses Wednesday at the PFX Spring Games at the Legends Way Complex in Clermont, Fla. The Presidents suffered a 13-1 setback to unbeaten Montclair State in the morning before falling by a 6-1 score to UMASS Dartmouth during the afternoon.
Game One - Montclair State 13, W&J 1 (5 Innings)
Montclair State tallied the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. W&J quickly countered with a home run by senior third baseman
Brooke Lapia (Oakdale, Pa./Chartiers Valley) that tied the game in the top of the second. The home run was the second of the season for Lapia.
However, in the bottom of the frame, Montclair put up a seven-spot to take control of the contest. The Redhawks added two more in the third before tallying three runs in the bottom of the fourth to conclude the scoring.
Montclair State racked up 13 runs on 12 hits in the victory. W&J managed just four hits in the loss.
Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior) paced the offense with the lone multi-hit effort for the Red and Black. Stout finished with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate.
Game Two - UMASS Dartmouth 6, W&J 1
UMASS Dartmouth used a two-out single to take an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The Corsairs tacked on two runs in the second on a double by Steph Nosky, which extended the lead to 3-0.
Laura Ryder (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) that cut the deficit to 3-1. The Corsairs took advatage of a W&J error to tally an unearned run in the third to take a 4-1 edge.
UMASS Dartmouth registered single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to move the score to 6-1. W&J had a chance to cut into its deficit in the bottom of the sixth but came away empty handed. The Presidents loaded the bases in the inning, as they took advantage of a pair of errors and a walk to load the bases.
Singles by
Addy Helffrich (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) and
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) put two more runners on in the bottom of the seventh. However, the Presidents left the bases loaded once more and fell by a 6-1 score.
Helffrich recorded the lone multi-hit performance in game two for W&J.
Kulka suffered the loss in the circle to drop her 2020 record to 2-2. The sophomore allowed six runs (five earned) in 7.0 innings of work.
Up Next: W&J concludes its stay at the Spring Games on Thursday with its final two games. The Presidents face Catholic University of America at 10 a.m. before facing Becker College at 2:45 p.m. Both games will be played at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Leesburg, Fla.
