STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team lost to Franciscan in four sets in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon in Stuebenville, Ohio.Â
 Franciscan 3, W&J 1 (25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22)
The Presidents fought hard the first two sets, but fell just short to Franciscan by scores of 25-17 and 25-23. As the Presidents continued to battle, they took home the third set with a score of 25-21. W&J had a five-point run, as the Barons registered three attack errors to trim the deficit to 20-18.Â
Ashley Kovel (Everett, Pa./Everett) used a kill to secure a third set victory for W&J at 25-21.
W&J trailed by as many as 11 points (16-5) in the fourth set but battled back. A trio of kills by
Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) brought W&J within two at 23-21. However, Franciscan was able to finish off a 25-22 victory with two of the final three points.
Carmichael recorded a season-high of 16 kills to lead all players in the match. Carmichael hit .682 for the match while adding two total blocks and two service aces.Â
Defensively, Kovel and
Sophia Sacriponte (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) were match leaders in blocks and digs, respectively. Kovel recorded four blocks, while Sacriponte brought in 21 digs for the Presidents.Â
 W&J hosts Geneva College in a conference match on Monday, October 18. The game is scheduled to start at 7 pm.
