W&J volleyball falls in straight sets at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team traveled to Beaver Falls on Saturday afternoon to face Geneva for the second time this week. Geneva rallied for a set one win and carried that momentum over to earn the sweep.

Geneva 3, W&J 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-17)

A kill by Ashley Kovel (Everett,Pa./Everett) helped W&J open with three consecutive points. Just a few points later, Lizzie Carmicahel (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) registered a kill to start a 5-0 run to strengthen W&J's lead to 13-6. The Presidents led for the majority of the first set but a Geneva run allowed the hosts to rally to steal the opening set. Geneva tallied 11 of the 14 final points for a 25-22 win.

The Presidents came out firing once again in the second set to grab a 9-5 lead after a kill by Carmichael. Geneva gathered the momentum and methodically put away W&J with a 25-19 set two victory.

Another Kovel kill pushed the Presidents to an early lead in the third. Consecutive attack errors by Geneva gave W&J an 8-6 lead in the third. The GT's would eventually pull in front for good, as they finished off the sweep.

Jaden Blough (Meyersdale,Pa./Meyersdale) led the Presidents with eight kills. Carmicahel and and Kovel recorded six apiece. Additionally, Kovel recorded a match-high four blocks. Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg,Pa./Gettysbrg) matched the match-high with 22 assists while also registering 14 digs for W&J. Sophia Sacriponte (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) tallied 18 digs to lead the Presidents defensively.

W&J returns to Salvitti Family Gymnasium on Tuesday, October 26 to host PAC opponent Thiel. The game is scheduled to have a 7 p.m. start time.
