W&J blanks Juniata for 1-0 shutout victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Hailey Wachowiak's (Wexford,Pa./North Allegheny) third quarter goal lifted the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team to a 1-0 non-conference victory over Juniata at Cameron Stadium Wednesday evening.

The win improves the Presidents to a 5-7 overall while Juniata drops to 3-14.

The teams combined for just three shots in the first half. W&J broke through midway through the third quarter with the lone goal of the match. Wachowiak scored off of a pass from Lina Crowley (Potomac,Md./Bullis School) in the 38th minute. The goal was the team-leading 10th goal of the season for Wachowiak.

Madeline Hubbard (Gettysburg,Pa./Gettysburg) inserted the penalty corner to Crowley to set up the goal.

Juniata's best chance of scoring came in the final 28 seconds of action when the visitors were awarded a penalty corner chance. Hanne Scheel sent the ball towards the goal but it was gathered and pushed back out by Ashley Kunkle (East Berlin,Pa./Bermudian Springs), which allowed W&J to run out the clock.

Wachowiak led the Presidents with four shots while Hubbard record two for the Red & Black.

Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) registered her fifth shutout this season. The strong defensive unit of Kunkle, Tiana Swierski (Phoenix, Ariz./Hammond (Md.)) and Ella Phillips (Arnold,Md./Broadneck) assisted Godat in stymying the Eagles offense.

W&J returns to Cameron Stadium on Saturday, October 30 at 11:00 a.m. The Presidents will host the Nazareth Golden Flyers for Senior Day and the final home game of the 2021 season.
