BETHANY, W.Va. -- Facing a win and in scenario in terms of qualifying for the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament, the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 setback Wednesday afternoon at Bethany College.
The Bethany win over W&J coupled with a Geneva tie Wednesday evening at Waynesburg eliminated the Red and Black from PAC Tournament contention. Geneva overcame a 2-0 deficit and evened the score with less than two minutes left in regulation before earning the draw. W&J entered the season as the reigning two-time defending PAC Tournament champions.
Sophomore
Parker Byas (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) put the Presidents on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal in the 15th minute of play. The goal was the team-leading fifth of the season for Byas.
Despite being out-shot by a 12-3 margin over the first 45 minutes, W&J would carry that lead into halftime.
The Bison tallied the equalized in the opening minutes of the second half, as Ramiro Veiga found the back of the net. Lucas Puebla recorded the assist on the Veiga goal.
W&J was out-shot by an 11-1 margin in the second half but was able to send the contest to overtime after several saves by senior goalkeeper Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg).
Veiga capitalized on a chance in the second overtime session, as he scored off a pass from Modou Faye in the 101st minute.
Bethany held advantages in shots (25-5), shots on goal (10-2) and corner kicks (6-1).
Miller finished with eight saves in his final game as a President. W&J finishes its season at 4-5 in PAC play and 5-8 overall.
