Kovel, Tomassini honored as W&J hosts Saint Vincent on Senior Day

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team suffered a five-set loss to visiting Saint Vincent College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon at Salvitti Family Gymnasium. The match was the season finale for both teams.

W&J opened the match by winning each of the first two sets. The Presidents claimed a narrow 27-25 victory in the opening set before winning 25-20 in the second set. Saint Vincent, however, recovered for a 25-18 victory in the third set. The Bearcats then added a decisive 25-14 victory in the fourth set to force a fifth set. Saint Vincent pulled away for a 15-9 set five victory to earn the victory.

Freshman right side Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) finished with a team-high 15 kills to pace the Presidents. Sophomore middle Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) reached double figures with 11 kills while senior middle Ashley Kovel (Everett, Pa./Everett) registered nine kills and three total blocks.

Senior setter Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) racked up 48 assists in her final match with the Red and Black. Junior libero Sophia Sacriponte (Butler, Pa./Butler) had the match high in digs with 34. Freshman defensive specialist Lanie French (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) recorded 16 digs off the bench for W&J.

The two teams split the season series, as W&J won at Saint Vincent in four sets back on Sept. 23.
