WASHINGTON, Pa -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team recorded a 1-0 win over Saint Vincent in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium. The win was the first conference victory and first home victory of the season for the Presidents.
The win was the 10th straight for W&J over Saint Vincent, a streak that began in 2012.
Following a tough one-goal loss to Westminster in their last match, the Presidents improved their record to 2-5 this season, which includes a 1-2 mark in conference play. The loss drops Saint Vincent to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in league action.
The Presidents nearly scored in the opening minute of play when
Jake Klonowski (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) hit the cross bar and
McKinley Joseph (Stamford, Conn./King School) followed with a shot high off of the rebound.
The Presidents tallied the first and only goal of the match in the 11th minute of play when
Nolan Agostoni (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) scored his first collegiate goal to give the Red and Black an early lead. Joseph set up the goal with the perfect pass to Agostoni, who delivered to give W&J a 1-0 advantage.
W&J out-shot Saint Vincent by a 9-5 margin over the opening 45 minutes of play. Senior goalkeeper
Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./ Lewisburg) recorded one save to allow W&J to carry a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Senior defenders
Quinn Pickering (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) and
Jonathan Youse (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) steadied the back line to help W&J record its first shutout victory of the season. Freshman goalkeeper
Charles Boldosser (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) relieved Miller and recorded two saves in the second half to nail down the win.
Saint Vincent out-shot W&J by a narrow 15-14 margin in the game. W&J held a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Presidents travel to Pittsburgh to face Chatham University in a PAC match on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
