Volleyball drops a pair at Thiel tri-match

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team dropped a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference matches on Saturday afternoon at Thiel College.

Grove City 3, W&J 1 (20-25,14-25,25-23,18-25)

In the first two sets, Grove City opened with early leads over W&J as they took the set victories. During the third set, the Presidents built an early lead and used a five-point surge to claim the set. Gianna Platt (Pittsburgh, Pa./ OLSH) secured the Presidents win as she recorded the final kill to send the Presidents to a 25-23 set victory. Unfortunately, the Wolverines led the entire way in the fourth as they won by a 25-18 margin.

Sohpia Sacriponte (Butler, Pa./Butler) recorded a match-high 31 digs in the loss while Sauerland tallied 24 digs. Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) recorded a match-high of 46 assists. Ashley Kovel (Everett, Pa./Everett) recorded four blocks, where were also a match high.

Thiel 3, W&J 0 (16-25, 18-25, 16-25) 

The Presidents started out strong as they had a 5-2 advantage over the Tomcats in the first set. However, the Tomcats tallied six straight points and eventually built a 14-7 lead before earning a nine-point set win. The Presidents took an early lead once again in the second set but dropped the set by a 25-18 score. The Tomcats finished off the sweep with a 25-16 victory in the third set.

Tomassini led the team with 17 assists. Sacriponte and Mattie Cherry (Tyrone, Pa./Tyrone) were the only Presidents to record double-digit digs as the both registered 10. Additionally, Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) led the team in kills (7) and blocks (2) against Thiel.

W&J returns home for a match versus Chatham on Tuesday, Oct. 12. First serve is slated to start at 7 p.m.
