WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman pitcher
Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) improved to 3-0 and junior
Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) collected two hits and two RBI to lead the Washington & Jefferson softball team to a 3-1 victory in game one over Chatham University. The visiting Cougars won game two by a 6-0 score as the two teams split Saturday's doubleheader.
Game 1 - W&J 3, Chatham 1Â
Hinz improved to 3-0 as the freshman put together another strong outing in the circle. Hinz tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits. She struck out six and issued no walks in the victory. Chatham opened the scoring in the first inning with back-to-back one-out doubles to take an early 1-0 lead.
W&J countered back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs.
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by
Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior). Eckenrode then proceeded to steal third and score on a sacrifice fly by
Kasey Scears (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) that tied the game at 1-1. A two-out RBI single by Dewick scored Stout to give W&J a 2-1 edge.Â
The Presidents added another run in the third when Dewick doubled home Labbe to give the Red and Black a 3-1 lead.Â
That was enough support for Hinz, who retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings. The tying run came to the plate in the top of the seventh but Hinz induced a groundout and pop out to end the game.Â
Eckenrode, Stout, Labbe and Dewick recorded two hits apiece in game one.Â
Game 2 - Chatham 6, W&J 0
Kayla Gee tossed a two-hit shutout for Chatham in a 6-0 game two win for the visitors. The Cougars scored two in the first, three in fifth and one more in the sixth.Â
Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) suffered the loss in game two. She worked 5.0 innings and allowed five earned runs. She struck out six and walked none.Â
Dewick and Scears tallied a hit each for W&J in the loss.Â
What's Next: W&J heads on the road for a pair of doubleheaders next week. The Presidents face Saint Vincent on Tuesday and Thiel on Saturday.Â
