Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lax downed by Saint Vincent

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team led after the first quarter of action, but seven-straight goals for Saint Vincent led to a 13-8 Bearcats victory at Alexandre Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Presidents fall to 0-2 on the season while SVC rises to 4-1.

Pat Brunner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) scored a pair of goals in the game's opening 10 minutes to give W&J a 2-0 advantage. Brunner scored off a feed from Brendan Tribeck (Enola, Pa./Trinity) and then after a faceoff win by Nicholas Grosch (Sarasota, Fla./Butler), Brunner found the back of the net from an assist by Alex Strain (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair).

After Saint Vincent scored to make it 2-1 Presidents, Grosch caused a turnover, and raced into the offense zone and scored to put W&J ahead 3-1 with 3:03 left in the first.

SVC scored in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter and scored four-straight goals in the second quarter as W&J was unable to register a shot in the game's second period. The Bearcats stretched their lead to 8-3 by scoring the first two goals of the second half.

Strain pulled the Presidents back within four with an unassisted goal at the 8:20 mark of the third quarter to make it 8-4 Saint Vincent, but the Bearcats added the next two tallies.

Liam Sullivan (Hingham, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) and Brunner both added tallies in the final 90 seconds of the third quarter to put W&J within striking distance, down 10-6. The Presidents twice more cut the deficit to four with goals from Carter Watts (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and Strain in the fourth, but SVC responded with goals after each President score.

Brunner scored three goals and handed out one assist. Strain registered four points on two goals and two assists.

Grosch posted a dominant day at the faceoff X, going 19-22 and scooping 10 ground balls. He also added a first quarter goal. James Deiuliis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) posted three caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Freshman Aidan Herman (West End, N.C./Pinecrest) collected five ground balls.

Henry Beardwood (Wilmington, Del./Beardwood) made eight first half saves while Brody Alloway (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) had four saves in the second half.

SVC held a 32-18 advantage in shots and a 25-12 edge in shots on goal. W&J posted a 19-6 advantage at the faceoff spot and both teams collected 25 ground balls.

The Presidents wrap up non-conference action next Saturday at Thiel.
