GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team earned a pair of wins at Thiel on Saturday afternoon.
The Presidents defeated Thiel 10-3 in game one and 9-0 (5 innings) in game two. WJ moves to 6-3-1 on the season while Thiel falls to 0-8.
Game 1 – W&J 10, Thiel 3
Every batter in the W&J lineup had a hit for the Presidents in an offensive game one victory. W&J smacked 16 total hits and six doubles in the win.
The Presidents score three runs in the top of the first with
Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) singling in
Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) before a two-run double by
Breanna Thomas (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) to score Dewick and
Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior).
After Thiel scored twice in the bottom of the first, W&J added a run in the third on another RBI single from Dewick that plated Labbe.
W&J extended its lead to 7-2 with three runs in the top of the fourth. Labbe singled home
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) and
Haylee Holman (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) smacked an RBI double to center field to score Stout and Labbe.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Dewick snagged a line drive at first base and doubled off a Thiel runner at second for an inning-ending double play.
Kasey Scears (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) singled in Eckenrode in the fifth to make it 8-2 Presidents.
Mollie Charlton (North Apollo, Pa./Apollo Ridge) doubled home
Kate Barone (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) in the seventh and then scored on a single from Scears.
Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) picked up a complete game win in the circle for the Presidents. She allowed three earned runs on eight hits and had four walks and four strikeouts.
Scears had three hits and Eckenrode, Labbe, Dewick and Charlton joined her with multi-hit games. Labbe scored three times and Eckenrode and Stout each scored twice. Scears, Dewick, Thomas and Holman each drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Game 2 – W&J 9, Thiel 0 (5 innings)
A six-run fifth inning turned a low-scoring game into a mercy rule situation in game two.
A 6-4-3 double play by the Presidents highlighted a scoreless first two innings between the Presidents and Tomcats.
In the third inning, the Presidents scored a pair of runs on a two out error by Thiel.
Freshman pitcher
Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) struck out the side in the bottom of the third inning as she didn't allow hit to any Thiel batter the first time through the lineup.
In the fourth, W&J extended its lead to 3-0. Thomas led off the inning with a double and Eckenrode drove her in with a two-out double of her own.
The Tomcats placed two runners on in the home half of the fourth, but Hinz was able to escape unscathed when a flyout to right field ended the inning.
A six-run fifth inning was highlighted by a two-run double by Eckenrode immediately followed by a two-run single off the bat of Scears. Thomas and Hinz both added RBI in the inning.
The Presidents preserved the shutout in the bottom of the fifth to earn the run rule victory.
Eckenrode went 4-4 with three doubles, three RBI and a pair of runs in the game two win. Thomas had a pair of hits, a double, a run and an RBI.
Hinz earned her fourth win of the season with a five inning shutout. She allowed four hits, struck out six and didn't walk a batter.
The Presidents return to action Thursday for a doubleheader against Grove City.
