Volleyball drops doubleheader at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team dropped a pair of competitive matches at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Geneva on Saturday.
 
The first game counted in the overall league standings while the second game was considered non-conference play.
 
The Presidents move to W&J 2-4 on the season and 2-3 in PAC play. Geneva advances to 9-1 overall, 5-1 in league play.
 
Geneva 3, W&J 2 (25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 25-27, 10-15)
 
The Presidents jumped out to an early two sets to none advantage by taking the first set 25-21 and the second set 25-18. W&J smacked 15 kills at a .148 hitting percentage in the first set and 13 kills at a .159 clip in the second.
 
Geneva responded by taking the third set 25-19. The Presidents led the fourth set 12-1 and eventually 24-18, but the Golden Tornadoes staved off five-straight match points and took a 25-24 lead. The Presidents survived a set point of their own, but Geneva was able to collect the final two kills to pull out the comeback.
 
The fifth set saw Geneva use a pair of five-point runs to lead 12-6 and the home team prevailed 15-10 to take the match three sets to two.  
 
Freshman middle hitter Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) posted a career-best 16 kills to just one error for a .536 hitting percentage and three total blocks.  
 
Samantha Sonnet (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillian) also established a career high with 12 kills. Claire Sauerland (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) added 10 kills and 14 digs. Lauren Gill (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) notched nine kills and Sophia Sacriponte (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) had seven kills and 17 digs.
 
Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) dished a career high 40 assists and added 19 digs, three kills and three aces. Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) collected 37 digs and handed out seven assists. Madison Simpson (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) matched her best single-game total with 20 digs and had two aces.
 
Geneva 3, W&J 1 (15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-25)
 
The Presidents won a competitive second set despite Geneva leading 22-20 late. After several Geneva errors, Ashley Kovel (Everett, Pa./Everett) and Kyleigh Jester (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) combined for a block and Gianna Platt (Pittsburgh, Pa./OLSH) finished the set for the Presidents with a service ace.
 
W&J nearly pulled off a similar comeback in the fourth set where Geneva led 23-17 and the Presidents responded with four-straight points, including kills from Jester and Kovel before Geneva was able to close it out.  
 
Jester led W&J in game two with eight kills and five total blocks. Sonnet added five kills.
 
Tomassini had 11 assists and 19 digs. Simpson had a dozen digs and six assists and Mackenzie Bingaman (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) notched eight assists and 10 digs. Platt set a new collegiate high with 10 digs and Jadyn Hartner (Washington, Pa./Fort Cherry) had an ace.
 
 
The Presidents return to action Tuesday evening against Waynesburg.
