Volleyball secures Senior Day win over Saint Vincent, 3-1


WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team recorded a 3-1 Senior Day victory over Saint Vincent College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match Saturday at Salvitti Family Gymnasium. 

The Presidents registered 48 kills and compiled a .221 hitting percentage in the victory. W&J raced out to a 25-15 victory in set one. Saint Vincent turned the tables in set two, as the visitors took leads of 8-2 and 18-6 before claiming a 25-23 set victory to even the match. The Presidents eased their way to victory by winning set three 25-15 and set four by a 25-16 score. 

W&J posted a balanced attack offensively, as five players had at least eight kills in the victory. Claire Sauerland (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) tallied 10 kills and 12 digs while Lauren Gill (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) recorded 10 kills, five total blocks and hit .421 in the win. Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) added nine kills and four total blocks. Ashley Kovel (Everett, Pa./Everett) produced eight kills and two block assists. 

Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) finished with a season-high 35 assists and added 12 digs. Defensively, Katie Conner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) finished with a team-high 21 digs on Senior Day. Conner was honored before the match for her contributions to the program the past four seasons. 

The win improves W&J to 2-1 overall and PAC play. Saint Vincent falls to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in league games. 

W&J travels to Bethany College for another conference match on Thursday, March 11. Start time is set for 7 p.m. in West Virginia.
