Offense backs Hinz's strong effort as W&J earns season-opening doubleheader split with Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team split its season-opening doubleheader with Bethany College on Sunday afternoon in West Virginia. The Bison picked up an 8-1 win in game one before W&J responded with a 13-3 victory in game two.

Game 1 – Bethany 8, W&J 1

The Presidents missed an early opportunity in game one, as the Red and Black were unable to score in the top of the first inning after starting the game with three consecutive walks to load the bases.

Bethany struck first with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) drove home Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-1 in the top of the fourth.

The Bison extended their lead to 8-1 with two runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively. Kulka took the loss in the circle in game one, as the junior worked all 6.0 innings. Savannah Keough (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) recorded her first collegiate hit in game one.

Game 2 – W&J 13, Bethany 3

Kasey Scears (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) set the tone for W&J in game two. Scears slugged a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Presidents in front 3-0. The home run was the first collegiate blast for Scears.

Labbe produced an RBI single to push the W&J lead to 4-0 in the second. Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) slashed an RBI triple to score Keough to make it 5-0 in the fourth. A run-scoring sac fly by Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) pushed the W&J edge to 6-0 after four complete innings.

Eckenrode added a third hit, an RBI single, to make the score 7-0 in the fifth. W&J extended the lead to 8-0 before Bethany scored three in the bottom of the sixth.

The Presidents put an exclamation point on the victory with five more runs in the top of the seventh. McCleester and Scears recorded RBI singles during the frame before Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) capped the scoring with a two-run single to make it 13-3.

Hinz tossed 7.0 strong innings to earn her first collegiate victory. Hinz allowed three runs on three hits in game two. She struck out five and walked just two. Hinz carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning in her W&J debut.

Eckenrode reached base four times (three hits), three runs scored and two RBI out of the leadoff spot. McCleester, Labbe and Scears registered two hits each in the victory. Labbe scored three times while Scears collected four RBI and reached base four times.

W&J returns to play on Tuesday, March 9 when they host Franciscan University for a doubleheader. Start time for the home opener is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Brooks Park.
