No. 17 Baseball slugs past Waynesburg

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team hit five home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Waynesburg on Saturday at Ross Memorial Park.
 
The Presidents, ranked No. 17 in the nation, move to 18-0 on the season and 14-0 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC play). Waynesburg falls to 4-10 overall, 2-9 PAC.
 
W&J eclipsed its 2019 single-season win streak record of 16 games with an 11-1 game one win and took game two 21-4.
 
Game one – W&J 11, Waynesburg 1
 
Junior pitcher Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton) tossed six shutout innings to earn his fourth win of the season. He allowed five hits, struck out three and didn't issue a walk on the day.
 
The Presidents scored in each of the game's first four innings to open up an 8-0 lead.
 
Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) singled in Adam Morris (South Park, Pa./South Park) in the first inning. Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) had an RBI single in the second. Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) and Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) each belted two-run triples in the third. Morris launched a solo home run in the fourth.
 
W&J pushed its advantage to 11-0 in the sixth when Tony Tamilia (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) doubled in rush and Sam Quinn (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) cleared the trees beyond the left-field fence with his first collegiate home run.
 
Morris had three hits, three runs, a home run and a stolen base. Sante went three-for-three with three runs and two RBI. Rush scored three times and had two hits and two RBI.
 
Game two – W&J 21, Waynesburg 4
 
W&J opened the bottom of the first inning of game two with a single, single, single, walk, two-run double by Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) and a three-run home run by Sante.
 
The Presidents ended up scoring eight runs in the home half of the first as Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./St. John's College) singled home Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) and W&J added an unearned run.
 
By the end of the fourth inning, W&J extended its lead to 13-0. Morris highlighted the scoring with a two-run triple.
 
Mason Gavlick (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) homered to lead off the eighth, Jonathan Haines (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) brought in another run with a double and Nolan Lutz (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) belted a three-run home run to put the Presidents ahead 21-3.
 
Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) earned his fourth win of the season by allowing just two hits and no runs over the game's first six innings.
 
Ryan Rametta (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski Area), Sam Stewart (Raleigh, N.C./Pro 5 Academy), Ethan Boring (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley)and Kamden Kautz (Oro Valley, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge) finished out the final three innings in relief.
 
15 different players scored for W&J. Kalinski and Zito each had three hits. Lutz drove in four runs
 
W&J and Waynesburg conclude their four-game series tomorrow at Waynesburg.
