W&J softball sweeps Thiel, extends winning streak to six straight


WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team extending its winning streak to six straight in dominating fashion on Tuesday afternoon. The Presidents swept Thiel College by respective scores of 8-0 (6 innings) and 8-0 (5 innings) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Brooks Park. 

The wins improve W&J to 7-5 in PAC play and 15-12-1 overall. 

Game 1 - W&J 8, Thiel 0 (6 Innings) 

Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) tossed a six-inning shutout in game one to earn the victory in the circle. Kulka limited the Tomcats to just four hits. The junior struck out seven and walked just one for the Presidents. 

Kulka was backed by a 14-hit attack from the W&J offense. Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior) produced three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) came through with a 3-for-4 performance while doubling twice and adding a triple as well in the victory. 

Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern), Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) and Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) added two hits apiece in the victory. 

W&J scored first on a fielders choice in the second inning. The lead remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning. The Presidents came through with four runs in the frame to extend the lead to 5-0. Kulka had the big hit of the inning with a two-run double to right center. 

Stout tacked on a pair of runs with a two-run single in the sixth inning. Dewick ended the game early with an RBI triple that plated Stout to make it 8-0. 

Game 2 - W&J 8, Thiel 0 (5 Innings)

W&J took control early in game two, as the Red and Black pushed across four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Eckenrode allowed W&J to score first with a steal of home. Dewick followed with a two-run single and Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored Dewick on an RBI single that made it 4-0. 

An RBI double by McCleester in the third inning scored Stout to extend the lead to 5-0. W&J finished off the victory with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. An RBI groundout by Labbe made it 6-0. Stout then tacked on an RBI double to extend the lead to 7-0. A pinch hit RBI single by Taylor Carlisle (Washington, Pa./Washington) scored Stout to conclude the scoring at 8-0. 

W&J finished with 14 hits in game two as their red hot offense stayed hot in the doubleheader sweep. Stout finished 3-for-3 at the plate. Eckenrode, Hinz, McCleester and Kasey Scears (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) all finished with two hits. 

Hinz pitched her third shutout of the season, as the freshman allowed just two hits in five innings of work. She struck out five and walked just one.

W&J returns to action with a PAC road doubleheader Friday afternoon at Franciscan University.
