BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team concluded its regular season Saturday with a road trip to first place Geneva College. W&J dropped game one by an 8-0 score in five innings before battling but falling 6-3 in game two.
W&J currently has an overall record of 17-14-1 and a 9-7 mark in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. The Presidents qualified for the PAC Tournament for the first time since 2015.
Game One - Geneva 8, W&J 0 (Five Innings)
Geneva claimed game one by an 8-0 score in five innings. After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Tornadoes scored three runs on four hits in the second inning to take an early lead. The GT's tacked on four more runs in the third inning to extend its advantage to 7-0. The hosts ended the game early with a leadoff double and a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
W&J only managed three hits in the opener.
Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) and
Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) both doubled in the loss. Kulka suffered the loss in the circle, as she allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings. The W&J defense committed three errors in the opener.
Game Two - Geneva 6, W&J 3
After two scoreless innings to open game two, Geneva used an RBI double by Madison Forsythe to score Sarah Johnson for the game's first run. W&J gained a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning after
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) smacked a bases-clearing three-run double.
Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks),
Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) and Kulka all singled in front of the Eckenrode hit.
Geneva battled right back, as they pushed four runs across on five hits in the bottom of the frame. The GT's took advantage of two errors in the inning to regain the lead at 5-3. After the Presidents went quietly in the top of the sixth inning, Geneva manufactured an insurance run in the bottom half. Johnson singled, stole second and eventually scored on another Geneva hit to make it 6-3.
Dewick and McCleester finished with two hits apiece in game two.
Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) suffered the loss in game two. The freshman gave up three earned runs on 4.2 innings.
