Historic women's lacrosse season ends with loss to No. 4 Salisbury in NCAA Third Round


LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington & Jefferson College closed its historic 2021 season with a 17-3 loss to No. 4 ranked Salisbury University in an NCAA Division III Championship Tournament Third Round match. The match was hosted by Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va. 

The Presidents conclude 2021 with a 10-1 overall record. Salisbury (17-0), winners of three Division III national titles, advances to face Ithaca College in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals. Ithaca defeated Washington & Lee by a 16-11 score Saturday. 

Salisbury tallied six goals over the first 10 minutes of play and eventually built an 11-0 lead at halftime. The Sea Gulls added the first three scores of the second half to extend their edge to 14-0.

Sophomore attack Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick) scored first for W&J. Effland registered an unassisted goal with 20:04 showing on the second half clock.

Effland followed with another goal less than three minutes later. The Presidents scored their third straight goal when sophomore Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) found the back of the cage with 12:21 to play. Salisbury tallied the game's final three goals to finish off a 17-3 win for the Gulls. 

Freshman midfielder Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School) tallied a pair of assists. Jenkins finished with team highs in ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (2). Sophomore midfielder Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) grabbed a team-best four draw controls for the Presidents. 

Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) capped an outstanding rookie season with 13 saves, which was one shy of her season high.

The Presidents advanced to the NCAA Third Round as one of the final 16 teams competing in Division III women's lacrosse. This was the second NCAA Tournament appearance for the Presidents, who also qualified in 2017.
