WASHINGTON, Pa. -- With the start of the 2021-22 academic year upon us, the Washington & Jefferson College Department of Athletics has seen several new faces join the staff this month. Read more about the nine individuals that joined W&J as interns during the month of August.
Jackson Bangert - Intern Assistant (Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving)
Jackson Bangert joins the W&J staff as its Intern Assistant Swimming & Diving Coach for the 2021-22 academic year. Bangert was a four-year member and highly accomplished swimmer at Edinboro University, a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in NCAA Division II. The Akron, Ohio native holds the school record at Edinboro University in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 50.21. Additionally, Bangert has been the head coach for the Cleveland Clinic-Akron general masters program for three years. Jackson recently earned his Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science from Edinboro. Additionally, he had a minor in photography.
Caitlyn Edwards - Intern Assistant (Sports Information)
Caitlyn Edwards joined W&J as its Intern Assistant Sports Information Director for the 2021-22 academic year. Edwards recently received her bachelor of arts in Public Relations and Corporate Communications from Campbell University. Additionally, she received her bachelor of science in Sports Communication from Campbell in May 2021. Edwards was a four-year swimmer for the Camels, which compete in NCAA Division I. During her time as a student-athlete, she served as social media chair for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Campbell. During her time at Campbell, Edwards worked as an intern for the Department of Athletics. She assisted with the gameday experience, used Twitter to provide live updates of sporting events, wrote pregame and post-game stories, planned and conducted communication strategies for assigned sports and conducted interviews with student-athletes. She was a co-host of Campbell Sports Corner, serving as an on-air host for a university sports show where she developed and organized a variety of aspects of the newscast production. During the summer of 2020, Edwards worked with the Washington Wild Things baseball team as a marketing and promotions intern. This past summer, she worked as a media/public relations trainee with Capitol Broadcasting and the Holly Springs Salamanders in North Carolina. Edwards is a native of Pittsburgh and attended high school at North Allegheny, where she graduated with honors in 2017. She competed in both swimming and water polo for the Tigers.
Maggie Fees - Intern Assistant Coach (Field Hockey)
Maggie Fees joined the W&J field hockey program in August 2021 as its Intern Assistant Coach. Fees played four years of collegiate field hockey, splitting her time at Division II West Chester University before competing for Division III Elizabethtown College during her final two seasons. During her time with West Chester, the Rams advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 2015. She was also named to the NFHCA All-Academic Team. After transferring to Elizabethtown, she played a key role for the Blue Jays in 2017 and 2018. She started all 34 games and anchored the defensive unit during her time with the Blue Jays. Fees earned All-Landmark Conference First Team honors as a senior. She was twice named Landmark Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week in 2018. She led the team in points (17), assists (5) and shots (68). She ranked second on the team with six goals and anchored the league's top defensive unit. Additionally, she was named to the NFHCA Division III National Academic Team. She earned her bachelor's degree in Business Administration with concentrations in Entrepreneurship and Family Business from Elizabethtown in 2019. She was a Presidential Scholar and involved with the Entrepreneurship Club at E-Town. A native of Orrtanna, Pa., she attended Gettysburg High School. As a senior, was GameTimePA First Team All Star and Gettysburg Times Player of the Year.
Isabel Glace - Intern Assistant Coach (Women's Lacrosse)
Isabel Glace joined W&J as its Intern Assistant Coach for the women's lacrosse program in August 2021. She competed for the women's lacrosse team at NCAA Division I Wagner College from 2017 through 2021. The Seahawks won the Northeast Conference Championship and earned a trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament in both 2018 and 2019. She was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Wagner. Academically, she earned mention on the NEC Spring Honor Roll (2017, 2020, 2021) and the NEC Commissioner's Honor Roll (2021). Additionally, she has worked with Underlying Strength as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor since July 2020. During her time at Wagner, she was a Sports Performance Intern, assisting in evaluation of student-athletes and development of speed and strength training programs. She is a certified personal trainer, a certified nutrition coach, a youth exercise specialist and CPR/AED certified. Glace earned a bachelor of science in Psychology in 2020 before adding a master of science in Media Management in 2021.
Tom Jurkovec - Intern Assistant Coach (Football)
Tom Jurkovec joined the W&J football staff as an Intern Assistant Coach for the 2021 season. He was a three-year letter winner and two-year starter at Division I FCS member Duquesne University. The Dukes won the Northeast Conference in both 2016 and 2018. Duquesne advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in the 2018 Playoffs. He was a three-time member of the NEC Academic Honor Roll. He tallied 61 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and an interception during his time as a player with the Dukes. Jurkovec served as a defensive assistant for his alma mater Duquesne during the Spring 2021 season. He coached linebackers Jahan Worth and Todd Hill to all-conference honors. During his high school playing days, he was a three-year letterwinner at Pine-Richland High School. The Rams won the WPIAL and advanced to the AAAA State Finals in 2014. Jurkovec earned his bachelors degree in Business Administration with a major in Finance from Duquesne in May of 2020.
Jimmy McCann - Intern Assistant Coach (Men's Lacrosse)
Jimmy McCann joined W&J as its Intern Assistant Coach for Men's Lacrosse in August 2021. No stranger to working alongside W&J head coach
Cody Golon, McCann spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with Golon at La Roche University. He served as an assistant coach and worked with the defense and goalkeepers during his time with the Redhawks. Additionally, McCann brings years of coaching experience at the club and high school levels in the greater Baltimore area. He served as an Assistant Coach at Westminster High School. While there, he worked with goalkeepers and defense to help lead the Owls to back-to-back Maryland State Championships in 2018 and 2019. As a player, McCann was a goalie at Mercyhurst University from 2002-2005 where he was a member of two NCAA Division II Semifinalist teams. While at Mercyhurst, McCann earned both his bachelor's degree and master's degree in Special Education before spending over a decade as an educator and coach in the state of Maryland.
Alexa Middleton - Intern Assistant Coach (Women's Basketball)
Alexa Middleton joined the women's basketball program in August 2021 as its intern assistant coach. She competed for four seasons for NCAA Division I member Monmouth University in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Middleton was a force on the low block for the Hawks. She appeared in 124 games with 59 career starts. Middleton finished her career with 896 points, 898 rebounds and 101 blocks. She led the team in rebounding her final three seasons. Middleton finished with 19 career double-doubles, including a team-high eight as a senior. Monmouth advanced to the MAAC Tournament Quarterfinals in each of Middleton's four seasons with the program. She was a member of the MAAC All-Tournament Team in 2019-20. She also served as a team captain as a senior. She earned her bachelors degree in Communications from Monmouth in 2020. Middleton most recently attended Cork Institute of Technology in Cork, Ireland to study International Business. She participated in the 2020-21 Sport Changes Life Foundation (SCLF) Victory Scholar Program. According to the Sport Changes Life website, scholars will continue playing or developing sport at all levels, work in the wider community with young people and gain valuable work experience through internships and mentoring with local businesses. Middleton is a native of Philadelphia and competed at Abington Friends School.
Noah Rhodes - Intern Assistant Coach (Men's Soccer)
Noah Rhodes joined the W&J men's soccer program in August 2021 as its intern assistant coach. Rhodes has recently held coaching positions at the Pittsburgh Soccer Academy as a summer camp coach. Additionally, he held recent coaching positions with the Pittsburgh Football Club Boys 2003 Team and served as a assistant varsity/goalkeeper coach with Avonworth High School & the Avonworth Soccer Association. He held a variety of coaching positions with the soccer and tennis programs at Mingo Central High School from 2016-19. He was named Southern WV Boys Soccer Coach of the Year in both 2018 and 2019. He led Mingo to its first and only Sectional Championship appearance in team history. Rhodes holds his US Soccer D License, US Soccer F License, United Soccer Coaches Goalkeeper Level 1 Diploma and a WV/PA Interscholastic Coaching License.
Eric Widger - Intern Assistant Coach (Softball)
Eric Widger joined the W&J softball program as its Intern Assistant Coach in August 2021. Widger served as a student manager for NCAA Division I University of Delaware softball program for the past three seasons. The Blue Hens compiled a 25-9 record and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Championship before falling to College World Series qualifier James Madison in the final. His duties included working to ensure all team and coaches needs were met daily. He organized, coordinated and planned gameday operations. Responsible for setup and assisted in execution of practices. Contacted other coaches for scouting reports, worked on team scouting reports and statistics, and assisted with day-to-day operations. In addition, Widger has worked as an intern and coach for the Delaware Cobras travel softball team. This past summer he assisted an 18U and two 16U teams. He earned his degree in Sport Management from the University of Delaware in May 2021.
