Komaniak’s goal gives W&J dramatic season-opening 3-2 victory at Point Park

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Senior forward Michael Komaniak (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview) scored in the 89th minute to give the Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team a dramatic 3-2 season-opening victory over Point Park University on Wednesday evening.

Komaniak also scored the first goal of the evening in the 13th minute of the game to give W&J an early lead. Komaniak then set up sophomore McKinley Joseph (Stamford, Conn./King School), who tallied the second goal in the 23rd minute of game, which helped increase W&J's lead to 2-0.

Point Park evened the score when Mats Douma and Matheus Lima scored back-to-back goals in the 31st and 33rd minute.

Point Park held advantages in shots on goals (8-7) and had six of the 10 corner kick chances in the match. However, after scoring twice in the first half, the Pioneers were held scoreless for the remainder of the match.

Komaniak posted team highs in goals (two) and shots (six) in the match. Joseph finished with a goal and an assist to back Komaniak's performance. First-year Nolan Agostoni (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) recorded the assist on Komaniak's game-winner.

Senior goalkeeper Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) recorded six saves in 90 minutes of work in net to earn the victory.

W&J hosts Hiram College in a non-conference match on Saturday, Sept. 4. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m. The match will serve as the home opener for the Presidents.
