WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team returned to action for the first time in two weeks as they opened Presidents' Athletic Conference league play Wednesday evening against Grove City. The Presidents fell by a 2-0 score to the Wolverines.
Grove City (1-0 PAC) scored once in the first half and tallied another score in the second half. The Wolverines grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a well-paced shot from just beyond the box into the top right corner of the net. In the 54th minute, Grove City made it 2-0 as a Sam Belitz header found the back off of a free kick by John-Luc Harbour.
In the first half, W&J held a 5-4 advantage in shots with the Presidents closest opportunity for a goal coming from a
Thomas Einolf (Carlisle, Pa./ Middletown) line drive to the bottom left corner of the net. However, Luke Greenway made the stop for the Wolverines en route to the shutout.
In the second half, the Wolverines out-shot the Presidents by a 10-7 margin. Senior
Quinn Pickering (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) and junior
Will Keber (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) were stout defensively throughout the game for W&J.
Joey Feola (Carnegie, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) led the Presidents offensively with three shots.
Michael Komaniak (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview) and Pickering each added two shots apiece for the Presidents.
For the game, Grove City held an 14-12 advantage in shots. Each team recorded six shots on goal.
W&J senior goalkeeper
Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) recorded six saves in 90 minutes of action in goal.
