Presidents drop match to first place Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team dropped a 7-2 decision to host Hartwick College Saturday in a conference matchup at Wright Stadium.

The Hawks got off to a quick start scoring in the first minute of regulation and again in the 13th minute. Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) put W&J on the board with a score to cut the deficit to 2-1. Freshman Lily Giering (Reading, Pa. / Exeter Township) assisted the Wachowiak score. However, Hartwick tallied another goal late in the first quarter to take a 3-1 lead.

Hartwick added three third quarter goals to strengthen its lead to 6-1 heading to the fourth.

Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del. / Alexis I. DuPont) was able to find the pack of the cage off of a rebound, which made the score 6-2. Hartwick would tack on a late goal to close out the scoring.

Ana Godat (Baltimore, Md. / Concordia Preparatory School) finished with 14 saves in the loss for the Presidents (5-8, 4-3 E8). Lex Matarazzo led the Hawks (8-4, 7-0 E8) with three goals and one assist.

Hartwick held advantages in shots (31-12), shots on goal (22-9) and corner opportunities (16-6).

W&J hosts Keuka College on Oct. 22 for Senior Day at Cameron Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
