WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team suffered a tough five-set setback at Chatham University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match Saturday evening.
The loss drops W&J to 8-5 overall while Chatham improves to 8-7. The two teams previously met at W&J in a "non-conference" match on Sept. 22 with the Presidents prevailing in four sets.
The Presidents opened the night with a 25-21 victory in the opening set before seeing the Cougars even the match with a 25-16 victory in the second set. W&J claimed a back-and-forth third set by a 28-26 score.
The Presidents finally prevailed in the third set on their fourth game point when
Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) and
Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park) registered back-to-back kills.
Chatham was able to force a decisive fifth set after gaining an early lead and pull away for a 25-18 victory in the fourth set.
Neither team led by more than two points in the final set. W&J led by a 7-5 margin after a Fetsko kill and eventually pushed its lead to 10-8. A block by
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) gave W&J match point with a 14-13 lead. However, the Cougars tallied back-to-back points to obtain match point. After the exchange of several points, the Cougars used back-to-back kills to end a thrilling fifth set with a 19-17 advantage.
Fetsko finished with a team-high 17 kills while adding 15 digs. Carmichael put together a strong effort with 15 kills on a .406 hitting percentage.
Claire Sauerland (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) rounded out the trio to finish with double-digit kills, as the senior finished with 12.
Sacramento finished with another 50 assist night and added 13 digs, defensively.
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Prep Academy) recorded a team-best 20 digs for W&J.
W&J looks to rebound on Wednesday, Oct. 5 when they host Allegheny College for a PAC match at 7 p.m.
