WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Lindsey Diggan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Governor Mifflin) scored three first half goals to record her first collegiate hat trick as the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team coasted to a 6-0 victory over visiting Oberlin College Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Cameron Stadium.
The victory is the fourth in shutout fashion for W&J (4-6 overall) this season. The loss drops Oberlin to 3-6 in 2022.
Diggan opened the scoring for the Presidents, finding the back left post after a pass from
Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) with 4:54 remaining in the opening quarter of play. With less than a minute remaining in the first quarter, it was Giering's turn to find the back of the cage. Giering tallied her sixth goal of the season, off a pass from
Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). The Giering score gave W&J a 2-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Red and Black used a pair of second quarter goals by Diggan to extend its lead to 4-0 at halftime. Diggan scored an unassisted tally in the 21st minute. Some brilliany passing by Giering and Wachowiak set up the fourth W&J score, which came with less than five minutes remaining until halftime. The score gave Diggan her first collegiate hat trick.
Wachowiak added a pair of third quarter goals to close the scoring. A little more than five minutes into the frame, Wachowiak scored off a touch pass from Giering, as she beat the goalie right post.
Less than four minutes later, Wachowiak scored again. Her second goal of the night and conference-leading 14th goal of the season stretched the lead to 6-0.
Sara Schriver (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School) registered an assist on the Presidents' final goal of the night.
The Presidents held advantages in shots (14-2), shots on goal (9-1) and penalty corners (6-2) in the victory.
Diggan (3 goals), Wachowiak (2 goals, 2 assists) and Giering (1 goal, 2 assists) all recorded multi-point efforts for W&J.
