UTICA, N.Y. -- The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to host Utica College Wednesday afternoon in the Empire 8 Tournament Quarterfinals.
The Pioneers gained an early lead when Shannon Jedreicich corralled a rebound and scored in the 12th minute of play.
In the second quarter of play, the Pioneers scored again off of a penalty corner. A strike by Emily Frank from up the top right of the circle gave Utica a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Utica wasted little time tacking on another insurance goal early in the third quarter. Alanna Fragapane registered a short-handed goal just 1:47 into the frame to bring the Pioneers lead to 3-0.
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md. / Concordia Preparatory School) finished with three saves in the loss. Utica held advantages in shots (11-6) and shots on goal (6-4) while the Presidents would hold the lead in corner opportunities (11-5). Freshman
Lindsey Blount (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) and junior
Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) finished with two shots apiece to lead W&J.
The loss wraps up the Presidents season at 6-10 overall. W&J put together a 5-4 record in E8 play to gain the No. 5 seed. The Presidents were making their first appearance in the Empire 8 Tournament since 2018.
