Salisbury downs W&J in Albright Tournament Championship Game

READING, Pa. -- Salisbury University used a strong shooting performance to earn a 78-63 victory over the Washington & Jefferson College men's basketball team Friday afternoon in the Doubletree Holiday Tournament Championship Game. The two-day event was hosted by Albright College.

The loss drops W&J to 9-3 overall. Salisbury improves to 7-6 overall with the victory.

Salisbury boasted a balanced and efficient offensive output. Four Sea Gulls scored in double figures as Salisbury connected on 57.9 percent (33-of-57) of its field goal attempts. The Sea Gulls made eight three-point field goals and led by as many as 21 points in the victory. Jordan Oates posted 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead the way for SU. Fifth-year senior Greg Bloodsworth, who earned Tournament MVP honors, finished with 14 points and five assists Friday.

Kyran Mitchell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) recorded a double-double effort in the loss. The senior finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and five steals in the setback. Junior guard Nick Gearhart (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) tallied 12 points and added eight rebounds.

W&J shot 38.2 percent (26-of-68) from the field during the game. They made 13 field goals in each half as Salisbury was able to hold down a W&J offense that averages 84.0 points per game this season. The Presidents made just three-of-18 attempts from three-point range.

The Presidents defense forced Salisbury to commit 23 turnovers. However, the Red and Black were held just a 17-11 advantage in points off of turnovers.

Mitchell and freshman Brandon Jakiela (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) both earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.

The Presidents host Geneva College for a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Salvitti Family Gymnasium on Thursday, Jan. 5. The game will be the first of three straight home contests for the Red and Black.
