Sarah Berardelli (Ambridge, Pa./North Catholic) and freshman guard/forward
Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) posted double-double efforts to lead the Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team to a 65-54 road victory over Geneva College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Metheny Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
The win is the sixth straight for the Presidents, who improve to 15-1 in PAC play and 18-4 overall. Geneva drops to 7-7 in conference games and 8-11 overall. By virtue of the victory, W&J has swept the regular season series from Geneva. The Presidents have won 20 straight overall versus the GTs.
Dryburgh finished with game highs in points (18) and rebounds (12) to record her seventh double-double of her rookie campaign. Berardelli finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double.
Dryburgh and Berardelli combined to account for the first four baskets as W&J built a quick 8-1 lead over the GTs. Geneva countered with a 10-2 run that gave the home team an 11-10 advantage on a basket by Taylor Jackson with 4:20 to play in the first. W&J scored the final nine points of the opening quarter to take a 19-11 lead after 10 minutes of play. Senior guard
Piper Morningstar (Pittsburgh, Pa./Wexford) accounted for five of the points during the spurt. Berardelli beat the first quarter horn with a basket that pushed the W&J lead to eight.
The Presidents held a double-digit lead for the better part of the second quarter. A driving layup by Morningstar swelled the lead to 14 points (29-15) at the 5:21 mark. A layup by senior guard
Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) in the final minute gave W&J a 38-24 advantage at halftime.
W&J tallied the first five points of the third quarter to extend its lead to 19 points. A layup by Berardelli stretched the lead to 43-24 with 7:56 to play in the third. Berardelli tallied a last-second layup in the frame to give the Presidents a 54-40 lead heading to the fourth.
The Red and Black continued to hold a double-digit lead for the entirety of the fourth quarter. Senior guard
Kamryn Lach (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) drained a three-point field goal with 6:50 left. Lach also registered the final points of the day for the Presidents, as her driving layup came with 1:06 to play as W&J finished off an 11-point win.
W&J converted at a 39 percent clip (23-of-59) for the game. The Red and Black assisted on 18 of the 23 made field goals. The two teams combined to commit 46 turnovers.
Morningstar finished with a game-high seven assists as she helped facilitate the offense. Isabella Roth posted a team-high 15 points and game-high five steals for Geneva.
The Presidents close the regular season next week with a pair of games against top four teams in the PAC standings. W&J heads to Chatham on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
