WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson baseball team was swept in a series for the first time since 2020 as Case Western Reserve took both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park. The Spartans topped the Presidents 5-1 in the first game of the day and 17-3 in the series finale.
Case Western's pitching was solid in both games as Recce Marley and Evan Faxon each went six innings and allowed just allow five hits and one run.
Game 1: CWRU 5, W&J 1
Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) notched the first hit of the afternoon to start W&J off on the right foot. Unfortunately, the momentum did not continue as the Presidents recorded three hits and left five players on base throughout the remainder of the nine innings.
Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) and
Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) recorded one hit apiece for the Red & Black.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when CWRU scored the first run of the game. Case Western added to their lead when they scored three runs during the top of the fifth.
Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkley Prep) recorded W&J's only RBI to send home Kalinski to put W&J on the board, 1-4.
Henry Litman (Marietta, Ga./Walton) started on the mound for the Red & Black and went 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk.
Game 2: CWRU 17, W&J 3
Case Western started the second game off strong with a 8-0 lead after two innings. The Presidents found the scoring column in the bottom of the eighth when Case Western's pitcher, Michael Shiniohara walked
John Klein (Vienna, Va./Madison) allowing
Jacob Eiermann (Avon, Ohio/St. Ignatius) to put W&J on the board.
Tony Tamilia (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) was then walked allowing
Connor Helm (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) to score.
Alec Jackson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) continued the scoring for the Presidents by sending
Scout Zaas (Powell, Ohio/Wellington School) home after his sacrifice fly to center field to close the deficit, 3-15.
W&J will look to bounce back on Wednesday, March 2, as they host a non-conference matchup against Muskingum. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
