CLERMONT, Florida -- The Washington & Jefferson softball team split a pair of games Sunday afternoon at the Spring Break Tournament. The team opened up the afternoon with a 5-2 win over Manchester in game one before suffering an 8-0 loss in the second game to Wisconsin-Whitewater.
W&J is 3-1 after two days of play at the Spring Games.
Game 1: W&J: 5, Manchester: 2
W&J got on the board first in the top of the second when
Aliya Schraeder (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) singled to left center to score the first run of the game.
Manchester loaded the bases and settled for one run to tie the score at 1-1 after four innings.
W&J responded with a four-run inning to secure the win.
Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee),
Ashleigh Gerber (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge), and
Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) all recorded RBI hits to give W&J a comfortable lead.
Gerber,
Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville), and Schraeder all had a pair of hits for the Presidents in game one.
Petrowski picked up the win, pitching the whole 7.0 innings with just one walk.
Game 2: W&J: 0, Wisconsin-Whitewater: 8 (6 Inn.)
Wisconsin-Whitewater had a strong second inning that the Presidents could never recover from. The Warhawks had a six-run inning in the second and added two more in the sixth to finish off the victory.
Emily Schmucker (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) and
Kasey Scears (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) would record the only two hits for the Presidents in the second game.
W&J will face Middleburry and Centre College on Monday, March 21. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex.
