Men's Lacrosse uses fast start to pick up first victory of 2022


WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Alex Strain (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) registered a nine-point effort to lead the Washington & Jefferson men's lacrosse team to a 19-12 win over visiting Marian (Wisconsin) in a non-conference game Saturday at Alexandre Stadium.

The win is the first at W&J for first year head coach Cody Golon

Strain found the back of the net six times and added three assists during the game. He added five ground balls and two caused turnovers to his stat sheet. 

W&J led by a 9-1 score after the first quarter and 13-6 at halftime. Both teams scored six goals over the course of the second half. 

Sean McCaffrey (Silver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) netted his first collegiate hat trick to back Strain. W&J had six players score at least two goals and eight players find the back of the net overall in the victory. 

Carter Watts (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) recorded five points (2g, 3a) while Parker Lucas (Delmar, Del./Delmar) finished with four points (2g, 2a) and Sam Snider (Morgantown, W. Va./University) added four points (1g, 3a). Zach Mey (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) finished with three points in a balanced offensive attack. 

Defensively, James Deiuliis (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper Saint Clair) paced the Presidents efforts with nine ground balls and four caused turnovers. Ronin Keane (Medford, Mass. / Arlington Catholic) picked up a game-high 12 ground balls and won 15-of-28 face-off attempts.

Austin Hopkins (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) added four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in the win. Luke Geister (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) finished with a team-best five caused turnovers and tallied a pair of goals. 

Henry Beardwood (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum School) finished with 10 saves over 60 minutes to pick up the victory in net. 

W&J registered a season-high 51 shots and held an 18-7 edge in caused turnovers. 

The Presidents travel to Mount Union on Saturday, March 12. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
