Game two comeback helps Bethany earn extra inning win to sweep W&J

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Washington & Jefferson College Softball team suffered a pair of losses on the road to Bethany College Friday afternoon.

The Presidents fell to the Bison by a 5-1 score in game one. W&J held a slim lead for a good chunk of game two before the Bison came back to force extra innings and eventually claim a 4-3 win in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Game 1: Bethany 5, W&J 1

Bethany racked up five funs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning. That was all Bethany starter Josie Wise needed. Wise allowed just one unearned run on four hits in a complete game effort.

Aliya Schraeder (McDonald, Pa./ South Fayette) was a bright spot for the Presidents. The freshman finished with three of the four hits for W&J. Schraeder singled home Mackenzie Boyd (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) in the fifth inning for W&J's lone run in game one.

Jordan Hinz (Ellicott CIty, Md./Centennial) started and took the loss in the circle. She worked three innings.

Game 2: Bethany 4, W&J 3 (10 Innings)

W&J suffered a tough 4-3 game two loss in extra innings. The Presidents were one out away from victory before Paige Allen singled home a pair to give the Bison the walk-off win and the sweep of the doubleheader.

A sac fly by Mollie Charlton (North Apollo, Pa./Apollo Ridge) scored Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) to give W&J a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th inning. However, the visiting Bison took advantage of back-to-back one-out walks in the bottom of the 10th. A double steal put both runners into scoring position before Allen's hit gave Bethany the victory.

W&J held a 2-1 lead after the second inning as an RBI single by Austine Kinney (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) scored Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks). The Presidents carried that lead all the way into the sixth inning. However, a pair of errors aided the Bison's efforts to even the score with an unearned run.

Neither team was able to break through offensively in the extra innings until the international tiebreaker was implemented in the 10th.

W&J managed six hits in game two. Schraeder recorded the lone extra base hit, as she smacked a one-out double in the eighth inning.

Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) suffered the loss in the circle despite a strong effort. Kulka tossed a career-high 9.1 innings. She allowed four runs (three earned) in the setback.
