GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team swept Thiel College on the road Wednesday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Presidents claimed game one by a 6-3 margin and game two by a 10-1 score in five innings.
W&J improves to 7-9 overall and 3-5 in PAC play. Thiel falls to 4-11-1 overall and 2-8 in the league.
Game One - W&J 6, Thiel 3
The Presidents came out swinging to open up game one.
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./ Northeastern) singled up the middle before
Kasey Scears (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) drew a walk setting up Mackenize Boyd (Beaver, Pa./ Beaver) to drive home the first run with her single to right field. The score remained 1-0 in the Presidents favor until Thiel tied the score in the bottom of the fourth.
W&J answered with four straight hits to open up the fifth inning.
Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) and Scears opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Boyd then recorded a double down the left field line to score the go-ahead run.
Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) then ripped a two-run single to left center before
Savannah Keough (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) would plate Dewick with her single to right center.
Dewick added an insurance run with an RBI single to score Labbe in the sixth inning.
Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./ South Western) tossed a complete game to improve to 2-1 in the circle. She allowed five hits and struck out three.
Boyd led the offense with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate. Four other Presidents recorded multi-hit games for the Red & Black in game one.
Game Two - W&J 10, Thiel 1 (5 Innings)
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning of game two, the W&J broke out for a season-high 10 runs in the five-inning victory. W&J totaled 11 hits, five of which went for extra bases for doubles.
The Presidents would combine to score nine runs in the third and fourth innings. Nine of the 10 runs were unearned as Thiel committed five errors.
Abby Fullem (Everson, Pa./Southmoreland) would plate the tying run for the Presidents in the second inning at 1-1. Eckenrode then opened up the five-run inning with a double to left center. A Dewick single to left field would send home the second run of the inning before
Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville) would record a two-run single. Keough followed with a two-run double to give W&J a 6-1 lead after three innings.
W&J would score four more runs in the fourth.
Haileigh Reed (Sproul, Pa./Claysburg Kimmel) would plate the game's final run with an RBI double to left field to beat Thiel by run rule at 10-1.
Petrowski earned the win in the circle, her third this season. Petrowski tossed a complete game, striking out four and allowing just one run.
Eckenrode and Labbe recorded multi-hit games for the Presidents in game two.
W&J travels to Saint Vincent College on Friday, April 22. The PAC doubleheader will be the first of three in as many days for the Presidents.
