W&J drops softball doubleheader to Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team dropped a pair of games against Grove City College on Saturday afternoon at Trinity High School Field. The Wolverines claimed the first game by a 8-1 victory and 9-2 win in the second.

Game One - Grove City 8, W&J 1

The Wolverines had a strong offensive first inning to create a lead that the Presidents could never recover from. Grove City scored four runs to open up the game before scoring two more runs in the fourth to head into the fifth inning by a 6-0 lead over W&J.

Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) opened up the sixth inning by reaching base off a Wolverine error before a Kasey Scears (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) single would advance Eckenrode to second. Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) recorded the only RBI for the Presidents with her RBI single to right field that plated Eckenrode for W&J's lone run of the game. Grove City would score two more runs in the top of the seventh to finish off an 8-1 victory.

Grove City's Kaitlyn Constantino earned her fifth win this season while Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./ South Western) took the loss for the Presidents. Kulka worked 3.1 IP innings and gave up six runs. Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) came in for relief and pitched 3.2 innings while allowing two runs.

Dewick was the only Presidents to record a multi-hit effort for the Red & Black. Scears and Mackenzie Boyd (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) would record one hit apiece for W&J.

Game Two - Grove City 9, W&J 2

Grove City opened up the second game with strong offensive efforts and took advantage of a pair of W&J errors to once again take an early lead. The Wolverines combined for five runs throughout the first three innings to head into the fourth with a 5-0 advantage.

Boyd started the fourth inning with a single up the middle before back-to-back doubles from Dewick and Austine Kinney (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) would help the Presidents put up a pair of runs. Grove City would tack on four runs in the seventh inning, which included a solo shot homer from Emily Smyth and a two-run homer from Maralee Caldana.

Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville) took the loss in the circle. Kinney recorded the multi-hit game for the Red & Black while Boyd and Hinz would contribute offensively with one.

W&J will play their first game this season at Brooks Park on Sunday, April 24. First pitch against Waynesburg is slated for 2 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the three seniors will be honored for senior recognition.
