GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's water polo team saw its 2022 season come to an end Saturday morning after dropping the fifth place match to Grove City by a 10-9 deficit.
W&J finishes the season with a 10-8 overall and 7-1 in CWPA divisional play.
The match was a battle throughout as the teams tied five times. W&J never trailed until the waning moments of the match. Unfortunately, Grove City scored the game-winning goal with 17 seconds remaining to win the fifth place match.
W&J took a 5-3 lead into halftime. The Presidents scored three of the four goals in the first goal.
Marcella Gallardo-Russell (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz),
Megan DePrez (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) and
Sydney Neumann (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) each recorded a goal for W&J in the first.
Kate McKiernan (Columbus, N.J./Pennington) and
Ryley McClellan (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded one goal apiece in the second quarter for the Red & Black.
Grove City came out firing in the second half, outscoring the Presidents by a 7-4 margin. McClellan would score the only goal in the third quarter to keep the Presidents within striking distance to secure the win. McClellan would add one more in the fourth quarter while Neumann added a pair of goals to tie up the game 9-7 lead 3:02 to play. However, Grove City scored the final three goals, including the game winner by Kyra Johnson with 17 seconds remaining to win 10-9.
Cecelia Weiss (Mohnton, Pa./Goveror Mifflin) recorded nine saves for the Presidents.
McClellan and Neumann would lead W&J offensively. They recorded three goals each.
NOTES: Megan DePrez and Ryley McClellan were named to the All-Tournament Second Team following the conclusion of play Saturday.
