W&J overpowers Saint Vincent for eighth straight win

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team raced out to an early lead and never looked back in a dominant 17-7 road victory over Saint Vincent College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday.

The win is the eighth straight for the Presidents. W&J is 7-0 in conference play and 9-4 overall. Saint Vincent, who is still battling for a spot in next week's PAC Tournament, falls to 4-3 in the conference and 9-7 overall.

Saint Vincent gained its only lead after winning the opening draw and scoring on its initial possession of the game. The lead, however, was short lived. Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School) answered two minutes later with an unassisted goal to even the score. The Presidents eventually built a 7-1 lead after the first quarter, as the Red and Black tallied seven straight goals to end the opening quarter.

Clara Sherwood (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) accounted for a pair of first quarter goals. Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic), Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick), Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and Becca Ghion (Sutersville, Pa./Yough) joined Sherwood and Jenkins as first quarter goal scorers.

W&J's lead swelled to eight by halftime as the visitors scored four of the six second quarter goals. A score by Sadie Firman (Richmond, Vt. / Mount Mansfield Union) with less than a minute to go in the second quarter gave W&J an 11-3 lead at halftime.

The Presidents closed the third quarter with three consecutive goals, which included a score by Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) that gave W&J a 15-5 advantage just before the end of the frame. Effland and Uhler recorded scores in the fourth as W&J cruised to victory.

Sherwood finished with a team-high four goals and she added an assist. Heck posted a goal and three assists. A total of 10 different Presidents scored in the match.

Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) each finished with five ground balls to lead the way. Brown recorded nine saves in goal.

W&J hosts Grove City for Senior Day on Saturday, April 30. The contest will be a match of PAC unbeatens and determine the top seed in next week's PAC Tournament. Start time at Alexandre Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
