BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team scored a season-high 17 runs Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of Bethany College in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
W&J extends its current winning streak to eight games. The Presidents are 7-0 in PAC play and 14-6 overall.
Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and
Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) led off the game with a pair of singles to set the tone for W&J's hitting in the finale. Peter Kalinksi (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) then recorded a fielder's choice to send Horvat home for the first run of the afternoon.
Scout Zaas's (Powell, Ohio/Wellington School) RBI single scored Rush to give W&J a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.
Bethany was able to put a run on the board in the bottom of the first.
Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkley Prep) led off the second inning with his first home run of the season to left center field to make it 3-1 Presidents.
W&J effectively put the game away in the top of the third inning. The Presidents recorded nine runs on nine hits in the inning. Zaas drilled a three-run home run, his third homer of the season, during the outburst.
Jacob Eiermann (Avon, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Rush added RBI singles in the frame. Kalinski then cleared the bases with a three-run double that gave W&J an 11-1 lead.
Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) followed with an RBI double that plated Kalinski.
W&J carried a 12-4 lead into the eighth inning. The Red and Black posted a five-run inning to further extend its lead.
Tony Tamilia (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon),
Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny),
Nate Hess (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and
Sam Schuster (Fort Harbor, Ohio/Fairport Harding) each recorded RBI hits in the inning for W&J.
Kalinski and Rush each produced three-for-four efforts at the plate. Kalinski finished with four RBI and three runs scored. Zaas, Samson, and Tamilia also finished with multi-hit games.
Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) tossed 5.0 innings while striking out seven and just walking one. He improves to 4-1 on the mound this season.
W&J travels to Saint Vincent College on Tuesday, April 5 as they wrap of a three-game series with the Bearcats. W&J swept the doubleheader with the Bearcats this past Wednesday. First pitch is slated for a 4 p.m. start time.
