WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The visiting Bethany College Bison tallied the final four goals to edge the W&J men's lacrosse team by a 12-11 score on Senior Day at Alexandre Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The teams traded scores throughout a back and forth game. However, it was a late Bethany run in which they helped W&J scoreless for the final 22-plus minutes that gave the visitors the victory.
Alex Strain (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and
Carter Watts (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) combined to account for 10 goals in the loss.
The Bison held a 4-3 advantage after the first quarter of play. Strain scored three goals in the second quarter. He twice evened the score (4-4 and 6-6) during the quarter. Joshua Allegra found the back of the net with just 16 ticks left on the second quarter clock. The Allegra goal gave Bethany a 7-6 lead at half.
W&J scored five of the first six goals in the third quarter to take an 11-8 lead. The three-goal advantage was the largest by either team in the game. Watts sparked the surge with three consecutive goals in the quarter. A goal by Strain put W&J up three with 7:14 remaining in the third.
However, the Presidents were unable to capitalize on the momentum. Bethany scored the final goal of the third and all three goals in the fourth to steal the victory. Tyler Britton's unassisted man-up score with 1:35 remaining was the difference.
Andrew Smith was the difference in the game. The Bethany goalkeeper made 26 saves. That individual effort was able to help the Bison offset a 54-31 disparity in shots. W&J also held a sizable 37-15 advantage in shots on goal.
Strain finished with six goals and two assists in the setback. The PAC leader in goals scored finishes his senior season with 57 goals and 16 assists. He tallied 139 goals in his W&J career.
Watts finished with five points (4g, 1a). Defensively,
Luke Geister (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) finished with 11 ground balls. James Deiullis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) had eight ground balls and five caused turnovers.
W&J finishes its 2022 season at 5-9 overall. Strain, Geister and
Sam Snider (Morgantwon, W.Va./University) were honored for their dedication to the program before the start of the Senior Day game.
