WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team completed a three-game series sweep with a 9-4 win over Thiel College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game Sunday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.
The three-game series sweep was the sixth of the season for W&J, who improves to 22-1 in conference play and 29-7 overall. Thiel falls to 14-22 overall and 10-14 in the league.
W&J had a strong offensive performance in the second inning that would give the Presidents the early secure lead. Thiel would be the first to score as they recorded an unearned run in the top of the second.
The Tomcats lead did not last long as W&J scored six runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame. All six W&J runs in the second inning were scored with two outs.
Scout Zaas (Powell, Ohio/Wellington School) singled with one out and scored W&J's first run on an RBI double by
Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y./Canisius). Following a pair of walks to load the bases,
Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) ripped a two-run hustle double up the middle.
Nate Rush (Wheeling, W.VA./The Linsly School) followed with a two-run single.
Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) became the sixth consecutive President to reach base when his RBI double scored Rush to make it 6-1.
The Presidents would score single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. LaDuca singled and eventually came around to score on a sac fly by
Jason Gregovits (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) in the sixth. Kalinski and Samson recorded back-to-back singles to start the seventh. LaDuca eventually plated Kalinski with a two-out RBI single that stretched the lead to 8-3.
In the eighth inning, an RBI single by
Roman Samson (Tampa, Fla./Berkley Prep) scored Rush for W&J's ninth run of the game.
Jameson Campbell (Painesville, Ohio/Painesville Riverside) improved his record to 8-1 in 2022. The eight wins are tied for the most in the PAC. Campbell allowed three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work.
LaDuca led offensively with three hits. Five other Presidents two hits apiece in the 13-hit output.
