WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School) tallied a game-high eight points and
Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick) scored four goals as W&J overpowered Saint Vincent in an 18-6 victory Wednesday evening in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals at Alexandre Stadium.
The win is the 10th straight for the Presidents, who improve to 11-4 overall. Saint Vincent ends its season at 10-7.
Jenkins spearheaded the Presidents early efforts. The sophomore played a role in each of the first four goals as W&J opened up a 6-0 lead after the first quarter.
The onslaught continued in the second quarter as W&J tallied the first three goals of the frame.
Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) scored back-to-back goals to stretch the lead to 9-0 at the 10:48 mark of the quarter. Kaylee Bandow finally got the Bearcats on the board with her goal at the 7:34 mark. However, W&J countered with goals by
Haley Lawyer (Glenside, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) to take an 11-1 lead into halftime.
The Presidents outscored the Bearcats in the third (4-3) and fourth (3-2) quarters to finish off another win by double digits.
While the Presidents were scoring at will on the offensive end, the W&J defense was up to the task on the other end. Saint Vincent entered the night as one of the top scoring offenses but W&J held them to just one goal in the first half and just six on the evening. PAC point leader Joey Smith was limited to just one goal and no assists.
Sam Casile (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) and
Gabby Galla (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) led the defensive efforts with four ground balls and three caused turnovers each.
Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) finished with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) made six saves and allowed just one goal in the first half.
The eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) matched a career high for Jenkins. Effland once again showed why she is a top offensive player in the PAC with four goals.
Becca Ghion (Sutersville, Pa./Yough) finished with a nice all-around game, as she tallied a goal, an assist, four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Senior captain
Clara Sherwood (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) scored a pair of goals to reach 100 points for her career. Sherwood becomes the 11th player in program history to reach 100 points.
W&J will host second-seeded Grove City in the PAC title match on Saturday, May 7. The match will commence at 1 p.m. The Wolverines bested Franciscan by a 12-6 score in Wednesday's other semifinals match.
